Symptoms of Sinusitis

Acute Sinusitis vs. Chronic Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis often heals on its own in a relatively short amount of time. Patients may experience symptoms for a few days or a few weeks. Common cold viruses or allergies could trigger acute sinusitis, and patients may recover without needing prescribed medication.

On the other hand, chronic sinusitis lasts longer than 8 weeks, and may be caused by growths or infections in the sinus passageways. Patients with chronic or recurring sinusitis should avoid activities that could worsen the symptoms. Unlike acute sinusitis, which may heal on its own, chronic sinusitis often requires medical treatment in order to heal.

Treatment for Sinusitis

Treatment for acute sinusitis may include antibiotics to kill an infection, over-the-counter nasal sprays or decongestants, anti-inflammatory pain relievers like aspirin, and saline rinses. Treatment for chronic sinusitis depends on the cause of the inflammation. If the sinusitis is caused by a bacterial infection, treatment will include antibiotics. If the sinusitis is caused by allergies, immunotherapy with allergy shots could help eliminate chronic or recurring sinusitis. Steroid shots, sinus surgery, and corticosteroid nasal sprays could also be used to treat the symptoms of chronic sinusitis.
