Sinus Treatments

Sinusitis is typically characterized by symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pressure, thick nasal discharge, and chronic cough. Patients who suffer from asthma or allergic rhinitis are more likely to develop acute or chronic sinusitis. Other cases of sinusitis are caused by infection, deviated nasal septum, or the presence of nasal polyps.

Patients who suffer from acute sinus infections 3-4 times per year or more often have underlying allergies, and can benefit from a complete allergy evaluation. If found to be allergic, allergy immunotherapy can reduce the number of infections by 80 to 90%.

Treatments for Acute Sinusitis

Most patients suffering from acute sinusitis recover without the use of prescribed medications. However, a course of antibiotics can help to reduce the symptoms and shorten the duration of the infection.

We may also recommend the following treatments:

  • Over-the-counter decongestants or nasal sprays.

  • Saline rinses.

  • Anti-inflammatory pain relievers such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or acetaminophen.

Treatments for Chronic Sinusitis

We recommend that patients who suffer from recurrent or chronic sinusitis avoid any activities or places that aggravate their symptoms, especially in the case of an allergy.

Before developing a unique treatment plan, we may use X-rays or CT scans to determine the extent of the infection.

Patients who suffer from allergy-related chronic sinusitis may benefit from the following treatments:

  • Allergy Shots. Rather than treating symptoms alone, immunotherapy helps to eliminate 80 to 90% of sinus infections by treating the underlying allergy.

  • Antibiotics. If an infection is the underlying cause of a patient’s sinusitis, effective antibiotics can help to clear the infection and any related symptoms.

  • Corticosteroid Nasal Sprays. Corticosteroid medications such as prednisone help to reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and provide relief from the symptoms of chronic and recurrent sinusitis.

  • Steroid Shots. Steroid injections provide rapid relief from the symptoms of sinusitis.

If more conservative treatment methods fail to offer relief from chronic sinusitis, we may recommend sinus surgery.
